Meet Our Taraweeh Quran Reciter: Hafiz Hassan Hlayhel

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from? What is your background?

I am originally from Lebanon and currently residing in Arizona. I studied full time at Arizona State University, and completed a major in Computer Information Systems.

Can you share your journey to becoming a hafiz? What inspired you to pursue this noble cause?

I began memorizing the Qur’an at age 16 and completed hifdz in three years with my teacher. While growing up, I tried multiple times to memorize the Qur’an and I never got too far. It was with my teacher, a college student only a couple months older than me, that I was I was finally able to complete the memorization of the Quran. He truly inspired me to push myself. I looked at how much he was sacrificing to teach me Quran, and how he was teaching me despite taking 20+ credits a semester. Alhamdulillah I was able to find a teacher like him to push me to complete hifdz.

Taraweeh Prayers Are Lengthy. How do you manage to maintain such beautiful recitation, consistency, and focus throughout the entire prayer session?

The main thing is to just always be reciting Quran in your daily life. If you recite it frequently enough, it becomes a lot easier to read for a prolonged time. On top of that, leading Taraweeh every year is another great way to get better, because it helps improve memorization and fluency.

In what ways do you aim to connect with and impact the hearts of those praying behind you during Taraweeh?

I always pray and hope that people come closer to the Quran, whether it’s praying behind me or someone else. When you get closer to the Quran, you become more motivated to listen to it, to recite it, to understand it. That’s when it’ll truly change your life.

What advice would you give to our youth who are pursuing Hifz?

Consistency is key, no matter how busy you are, always leave some time for hifz. Make it a priority in your life and sacrifice from your time and you will see the blessings that come with your sacrifice.
